LARGE Rugged 31 inch diameter ring - 3/8 inch thick steel construction - powder coated for a durable and beautiful finish! 1.25 inch diameter radial arms are chrome-moly hardened. The older version used 4 inch diameter wheels. I have switched recently to 3 inch wheels which are harder. These wheels vary in color. All steady rests now come with a 4th tube mounted at about the 1 o'clock position to allow the turner to place the upper arm off center so the arm is out of the way of the laser holder of a hollowing system. Of course, my hollowing system is designed with an articulating and adjustable laser holder to get around this problem. You can see some of these steady rests with the 1 o'clock arm in the Customer Gallery of my website. |
I have redesigned the steady rest as of February, 2009. See a photo of the new design on the website below. The weight of the steady without the arms and wheels is lighter now at about 45 pounds. The outer stablilizing ring is now integrated into the main ring and the stock used s 1/4" thick. They are vibration resistant even with this thinner stock. They are cleaner looking than the original design with fewer welds. Turners have often commented in the past about how rugged and beefy these steady rests are! You can specify 3/8 inch stock if desired for an extra $50. Turn near the maximum diameter allowed by your lathe!!
Here is a steady rest for a 48 inch diameter swing lathe!!! It is designed to fit on the outboard extension of a Oneway. It uses 1.5 inch diameter arms and is 54 inches in diameter. I also have a booster accessory (see the fluorescent booster below) to allow those with the Oneway outboard extension to mount their steady rest on the headstock side of the lathe.

Radial arms move to adjust from 1/2 inch to 23 inch diameter spindles or bowls for final shaping, sanding or hollowing! 1/2 inch mounting plate with recessed attachment bolt. Let me know what lathe you have and I will create the proper configuration! Smaller lathes use smaller diameter ring structure as needed. I now have a new design for those using 20-24 inch swing lathes and having a need to stablize 20-23 inch diameter pieces. It uses a wrap around base and has 6 arms at the bottom to support heavy logs. SEE PHOTO AT BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! This version is priced at $700 with a total of 8 arms and wheels. Another way to support heavy pieces is to use an available adapter which allows 2 wheels per support arm. A 3-armed steady rest then holds 6 wheels to distribute the weight better.
Shown below is a new "Clark Multi-Steady" that can be used on 20 and 24 inch radius lathes. One pair of through tubes is aimed at 10 inches up and the second pair 12 inches up from the surface of the lathe bed. Multi-Steadys can be set up for 3 different sized lathes such as 16, 20, and 24 inch (e.g. Stubby, Powermatic, Oneway) The Clark Multi-Steady features removable alignment plates to allow it to fit on many lathes!
