"VIDEO PAGE - The
Clark Deep Hollowing System"
The following videos are labelled according to the topic presented. These are streaming video so they should play fairly quickly with Windows Player without downloading them prior to playing them. Each is meant to show some aspect of hollowing. At this point, I am showing a steady rest without the external stabilizing ring and as a result, the steady will flex significantly. This is an experimental rest to see how much movement can be induced by hollowing with different methods. It is not meant to demonstrate how my standard rests function, as they all effectively eliminate this movement due to the external stabilizing ring.
Hand Held Hollowing by a Novice Click Here
See Nick, my teenage son, trying desperately to use a commonly available hand-held hollowing system. Neither of us could successfully hollow this dry aspen bowl. Dried Aspen presents quite a challenge to hollow endgrain. It took me a long time to get to this point by hand before I let him have a go at it. He was surprised how difficult it turned out to be.

Nick was very pleased with how quickly and easily he was able to hollow this dried aspen endgrain using my standard 1/4 inch cutter. This video is shows his very first attempt.

This long, unedited clip shows some more hollowing of this dried aspen vessel. Granted, this is a relatively shallow project, and some might say a captured system is not necessary. This systems certainly reduces the required effort and wear and tear on your hands and arms, and really makes hollowing much more fun! This laser is very stable. I hollowed aggressively (off camera) while the cutter chattered due to the flex allowed by the unstablized steady rest, and the laser continued to be aligned at the tip of the cutter exactly where I had aligned it at the start. Don't forget that your hollowing experience will depend on many factors including the wood, cutter, depth of cut, length of bar extended beyond the tool post, and speed of lathe.
Please let me know how the videos work as I am experimenting with this process. I appreciate your feedback! I hope to continue adding video clips including a general setup video plus some more on the steady rest and the new computer controlled router attachment for woodturning lathes. Eventually I will show some deep hollowing projects. Let me know if there is something you would like to see.
